Dear Yoshi-San (including Cornelia),

I write this e-mail to you because I read an article in a Dutch newspaper about a Japanese woman who moved to the Netherlands twenty years ago. Her name is Fumiko Miura and she came here because she married a Dutch man, Hans. In the article she tells us about a book she wrote about the differences between Japan and The Netherlands. In the book, she also wants to tell us how beautiful and interesting The Netherlands is. The article starts off with the Japanese saying toudai moto kurashi, which means at the foot of the lighthouse it is darkest. It means that we often do not see what is nearest to us. She loves Leiden, the mills in Kinderdijk and the connection between the Japanese and the Dutch. Between 1603 and 1868 (the Edo period in Japan), Dutch was the most popular language in Japan, because the Dutch were the only people that were allowed to trade with Japan. According to Fumiko, this is one of the facts that is at the foot of the lighthouse. The book is called Polderjapanner (Polder Japanese) and as far as I know it is only available in Dutch. I wanted to share this story with you because you and Moni may be unable to read it.
Please send my greetings to Moni. I hope you have a nice time in your new job.
Best regards,
Sibe Doosje.
PS: In the attachment you will find a picture that I took recently. To me, it almost looks like a painting. I hope you like it.
